“we are like the sun and the moon. we will always share
the same sky but we can never stand together."
soul mate (noun): 1. a person with whom one has a strong affinity.
2. park chanyeol’s soulmate is byun baekhyun, byun baekhyun’s soulmate is park chanyeol.
Byun Baekhyun has known Park Chanyeol all his life. Even before they were born, when they were kicking at their mothers’ wombs, they already knew each other (their parents had known each other). They went to the same kindergarten, spent both their childhoods flinging banana peels at each other, sticking out tongues and pushing each other down the slide at the neighbourhood playground. They went to the same elementary school, had the same first crush on their teacher, had fun playing pranks on innocent students and they were notoriously known as the “Dumb & Dumber” duo. They went on to middle school together (it was a surprise that they were still in the same school) but their bodies were growing and they mocked each other whenever their voices would suddenly break.
It was a surprise that they even managed to move on into the same high school, donning the same uniform; Park Chanyeol waiting in front of Byun Baekhyun’s house every morning without fail. It was a routine for the both of them and it was awkward, it felt weird whenever Baekhyun or Chanyeol fell sick. It wasn’t right if a morning came and Baekhyun couldn’t shove a slice of toast into Chanyeol’s mouth while climbing onto Chanyeol’s bicycle and pulling him into a headlock.
“You know,” Chanyeol starts as Baekhyun stands up on Chanyeol’s bicycle, wind brushing against his cheeks and he lets both hands up into the air and screams. Baekhyun still hears Chanyeol’s question, putting his palms on Chanyeol’s shoulders and, “Yeah?”
“It’d be nice if one day, you shoved my breakfast into my mouth nicely, like, in a plastic bag and handed it to me,” Chanyeol said, keeping his eyes on the road in front of him. “Something like ‘Chanyeol-ah~ Open your mouth~’ would be nice instead of getting toast shoved in my mouth,” as he got punched on his arm.
“Yeah, dream on,” Baekhyun retorts as Chanyeol almost causes the both of them to fall off Chanyeol’s bicycle, earning a scream from the older. “Yah! Look where you're going!”
“Who was it that punched me and caused me to lose my balance!” Chanyeol shouts, balancing the both of them as Baekhyun’s arms moved to wrap themselves around Chanyeol’s stomach. Baekhyun pouts as Chanyeol rolls his eyes, “I know you’re pouting. Don’t do that, it’s disgusting.”
Another punch and the both of them fall off the bicycle and they land up on the rough, sandy ground and Baekhyun screams at Chanyeol for being a sucky cyclist.
Baekhyun and Chanyeol do not end up late for their first class, coming across as a surprise seeing that they could barely make it to school in one piece. Chanyeol waits at Baekhyun’s locker, as the older took out his books and Chanyeol purposely slams the locker door when Baekhyun has yet to remove his hand.
“Ouch, what the hell did you do that for!?” Baekhyun glares at Chanyeol who only laughs and starts speed walking away. His power walk slowly progresses into a run as Baekhyun chases after him, hand reddening and the classmates surrounding them shake their heads in disapproval.
The both of them come to a stop when Chanyeol stops in front of a senior, uniform all prim and proper and he knocks a book on both their heads. He flashes both of them a perfect smile (“He should advertise for a toothpaste company,” Chanyeol notes) and Baekhyun blushes under his gaze, apologising for his actions immediately.
“Watch where you’re going, Chanyeol-ah, Baekhyunnie, you don’t want to run into any teachers. You’re going to be late too, go on to your first class,” he says, ruffling Chanyeol’s hair and laughing it off when Chanyeol glares him. He pats Baekhyun’s hair who nuzzles against his palm, and he smiles even harder.
“See you later, Luhan-hyung!” Baekhyun shouts from across the hall, waving with a bright smile on his face as Luhan beams back at him, returning the wave while Chanyeol can only frown.
“I think I like him,” Baekhyun whispers offhandedly, as he twirls his cup of coffee. It was one of their afternoon hangout sessions at the nearby coffeehouse which provided cheap quality coffee. It was not really cheap but since Chanyeol works at the coffee house during the weekends, he gets employees’ discount and Baekhyun likes to make use of that. Therefore, the two of them turn Chanyeol’s workplace into their usual hangout place because, well, the coffee is cheap. Chanyeol can barely contain his surprise, choking on his tea and a “What?!”
“Could you like, repeat that? You might have just said the biggest piece of information that could possibly lead to the apocalypse,” Chanyeol says as Baekhyun glares at him. Baekhyun leans back in his chair, crossing his arms and he pouts (Chanyeol resists the temptation to touch those lips, they were very literally begging to be touched.)
“I said, I think, I like Luhan-hyung,” Baekhyun repeats and Chanyeol can’t prevent the look of utter shock that’s slowly appearing on his face.
“Oh my god,” Chanyeol’s mouth form words before he processes them and Baekhyun glares at Chanyeol again, threatening to fling the cup of macchiato at the younger. “You must be kidding me. Wait, why are you telling me this? Oh my god, are you trying to make me your matchmaker or something, oh my god, Baekhyun. I could have lived without this information!”
“… Shut up, Chanyeol.”
“Baekhyun! I thought of an idea of how you can confess to Luhan-sunbae!” Chanyeol shouts as he slams the door of Baekhyun’s room open on a Sunday morning, where they’d have their weekly homework sessions without fail. Baekhyun only turns red and he brings a single finger to the front of his lips, beseeching the younger to quieten down.
“Can you like, not say it so loud.”
“Okay, so I was thinking, maybe you could do it old school and you know, secretly slip a letter into his locker, saying that you want to meet him after school at this very discreet place, or something like that and then, you can profess your undying love for him!” Chanyeol suggests, beaming and Baekhyun really wants to shove a table at him and his dumb smile. “It’s a brilliant idea, isn’t it?”
Chanyeol frowns at Baekhyun’s dark face and then, an imaginary lightbulb appears by his head and he snaps his finger. “Oh! Or do you want me to help you fake your handwriting?”
“Park Chanyeol, please don’t say anything else,” Baekhyun shouts, hitting Chanyeol on the arm with the closest object that he could find – a dictionary.
(But Byun Baekhyun does as Park Chanyeol suggests. He goes to the neighbourhood bookshop on Sunday afternoon, after Chanyeol remembered that he had work and had to run down to the café, only causing Baekhyun to shake his head and why does that fool even need a job, when Chanyeol is filthy rich and lives on the most expensive street in their neighbourhood. But Chanyeol is Chanyeol and Baekhyun learns not to question.
He buys the gayest-looking letter pad, all pink hearts and colourful balloons and a pink glittery pen and he ignores the stare of the cashier as he pays for it. “Thanks,” he breathes out before grabbing the bag of items and running out of the store.
Nope, he never entered the bookshop and definitely, he didn’t buy anything questionable from it.
When Baekhyun reaches home, under the safety of his bed covers, he pops the cover of his pen open and shakes it, starting to write on the letter pad. Dear Luhan-sunbae, no wait, was this too obvious, Baekhyun frowns and he correction tapes over it and ends up writing the same Dear Luhan-sunbae and he says aloud, “Yeah, maybe I should go write a draft first.”
He nods to himself and he speaks out what he wants to write out and oh my god, is Chanyeol’s weird affecting my brain.)
Baekhyun has to force Chanyeol to slip his confession letter into Luhan's locker because Baekhyun is a wimp and doesn't have the guts to do so. Chanyeol only snorts loudly, grabs the letter from Baekhyun’s hand and slips it underneath Luhan’s locker with everyone’s eyes on him. Baekhyun freezes and he almost wants to cry because he knows everyone is looking and he suspects he has anthropophobia and he just wants a hole to open up from underneath him and swallow him whole.
“There, done!” Chanyeol beams and Baekhyun wants to cry.
After school, Baekhyun can’t stop the fast palpitation of his heart even though he was supposed to be doing math and graphs are the worst thing in existence, but the clock in the classroom reads 2.30pm and he had written on the letter that he’d have wanted to meet Luhan at 3pm and that’s only half an hour away. Chanyeol rolls his eyes at Baekhyun’s hyperactivity, obviously annoyed at the way Baekhyun’s feet are tapping incessantly in excitement and he questions aloud, “Why did I stay behind with you. You’re not even talking to me!”
Baekhyun glares. “You’re here, obviously because you’re my best friend and continue drawing your graph. Or I’ll break your curve ruler.”
A flash of horror appears on Chanyeol’s face. “No. You can’t do that to Minnie!”
“Of course I can,” Baekhyun breathes out, an evil look glistening in his eyes. He grabs Chanyeol’s pink curve ruler and holds it between his two hands. Chanyeol almost wants to cry as Baekhyun starts to exert some force. “Just look.”
“OKAY! OKAY! I KNOW, WILL YOU JUST GIVE ME BACK MINNIE,” the taller shouts, tears almost welling up in his eyes as Baekhyun smirks, puts down Chanyeol’s curve ruler and pats him on the head.
“Now, that’s better.”
At 2.50pm, Baekhyun drags Chanyeol out of the classroom and walks over to the back of the school, where he was sure no one was because it was 3pm and everyone would be home already as they were dismissed early today. Luhan probably has student council duties and has to stay behind to finish up the paperwork (and no, Baekhyun wasn’t stalking him, he just had very reliable sources regarding Luhan’s schedule).
He tries to play it off cool as he forced Chanyeol to hide behind one of the vending machines (benches were not an option since he was too tall and vending machines were warm and Baekhyun liked to torture Chanyeol) and leaned against the wall of the school building, fingers fisting the inside of his pants pocket due to the nervousness.
Soon, he could see a familiar figure running towards him and Baekhyun waves enthusiastically in Luhan’s direction with a slight pinkish tinge on his face. His fingers clench even tighter in his pockets as Luhan neared him and the tingly feeling of nervousness in his stomach didn’t go away.
“So, what’s up?” Luhan asks, with a beam as he ruffled Baekhyun’s hair and Baekhyun’s heart only beats faster and he tugs at the sleeve of Luhan’s shirt shyly.
“Um, Luhan-sunbae, I’ve got something to say….” Baekhyun mumbles out and Luhan’s “Hm?” only causes him to be even more nervous and from the corner of his eye, he could see Chanyeol beaming at him and mouthing “Hwaiting!” which really, didn’t really help and only made him even more nervous.
“I…I…. I like you, Luhan-sunbae.”
Luhan is taken aback, shock present in his large, doe-like eyes as he steps several steps backwards. Baekhyun freezes, it’s like as if he knows what’s going to come next and Baekhyun’s afraid of it and Luhan frowns slightly and Baekhyun knows that he was right.
“I… I…. I’ll think about it,” Luhan mumbles and Baekhyun nods, swallowing the spit that he never knew he was holding in his throat. Luhan grabs hold of Baekhyun’s hands, squeezes them gently and he pats on them before he leaves. Baekhyun feels his knees slowly turn to jelly, falling to his knees as Chanyeol runs from his hiding spot behind the vending machine and pulls Baekhyun into a hug, rubbing soothing circles on his back as Baekhyun started to sniff.
“It’s okay, Hyun-ah, it’s okay,” Chanyeol breathes and Baekhyun nods, tears wetting Chanyeol’s uniform and Chanyeol only whispers soothing words into Baekhyun’s ears. Chanyeol never calls Baekhyun ‘Hyun-ah’, it’s reserved only for certain occasions.
Occasions like these.
The next day, Chanyeol meets Baekhyun in front of his house and unlike usual, Baekhyun is quiet and he passes Chanyeol’s bread silently, eyes looking at the asphalt ground. Chanyeol frowns, he doesn’t like to see a Baekhyun like this, he wants to see a happy Baekhyun, a Baekhyun that would be hitting his head by now and he lifts Baekhyun’s chin up, frowning even more when he sees Baekhyun’s red, puffy eyes.
“Are you stupid, Byun Baekhyun? !” Chanyeol shouts. “You spent all night, crying, didn’t you?”
Baekhyun doesn’t reply but Chanyeol doesn’t need a reply from Baekhyun because he already knows what Baekhyun’s response would be and he doesn’t actually want to hear it. Baekhyun tugs at the sleeve of Chanyeol’s jacket, prompting him to start moving away, moving to school. Chanyeol only sighs and complies, but not before he rubs at Baekhyun’s cheeks and force a smile out of his lips.
When Baekhyun and Chanyeol reach school, they are surprised at the image of Luhan leaning against Baekhyun’s locker door, fingers playing with a bar of chocolate wrapped up rather sloppily with a pink ribbon. Baekhyun blinks in disbelief as Luhan beams at him, waves enthusiastically and he trudges over, footsteps slow.
“So, I thought about it last night,” Luhan begins and his feet start to shuffle, a sign that he’s nervous and his heart was beating fast. “I think, I should give it a shot,” and as soon as he finishes his sentence, he kisses Baekhyun on the cheek and he slides the bar of chocolate into Baekhyun’s beautiful, beautiful fingers.
Baekhyun gasps when he feels something wet on his cheek and he reacts too slow because Luhan has already ruffled his hair and walked away, heading back to the council room (again, Baekhyun, does not stalk Luhan’s schedule, he just has a very reliable source) and Chanyeol has to poke his sides before Baekhyun finally has a reaction.
“Oh my god, he accepted your confession!” Chanyeol says loudly, albeit too loudly and Baekhyun flushes red and he jumps, almost crushing the chocolate in his hands. “Congratulations!”
With a smile, Baekhyun nods.
For almost every lesson in class, Baekhyun is called out for not paying attention because he’s too busy staring at the bar of chocolate that Luhan gave him and Chanyeol had mocked at him, “are you even going to eat the chocolate because I suggest you give it to me as I’m hungry now” and Baekhyun only glares at Chanyeol.
Luhan’s the very definition of a perfect boyfriend, he helps him with his homework and brings him on dates every Friday after school. They visit different venues every week, from the nearby café that is just down the street from the school (expensive, but the taste is really good, it brings shame to the café that Chanyeol works at) to the cinemas at the mall. Luhan sends him home every day after school, smiling and stating that Chanyeol’s Baekhyun’s best friend so he can’t rob away Chanyeol’s alone-time with Baekhyun.
Baekhyun doesn’t know what to respond so he only turns red at Luhan’s words and Luhan laughs and ruffles his hair and presses a kiss to the corner of his lips.
“Repeat after me,” Luhan says one day and Baekhyun blinks curiously from his Math homework. “Wo,” Baekhyun repeats. “Ai,” Baekhyun looks even more confused but Luhan’s beam only gets brighter and Baekhyun would do anything to see the glint in Luhan’s eyes grow brighter. “Ni.”
“Say it together,” Luhan says as he intertwines their fingers, their fingers almost a perfect fit for each other. Baekhyun says it altogether and Luhan giggles like a teenage girl and Baekhyun is more confused.
“What does that mean?” Baekhyun questions.
“I just made you say, I love you, in Chinese,” Luhan says proudly and Baekhyun only flushes even redder (even redder than a strawberry, Luhan would say) and he flails and Luhan only laughs aloud.
“Baekhyun-ah, you need to stop being so cute.”
“Since when was there a new worker here?” Baekhyun asks Chanyeol, staring at the new male worker of the café from several tables away, large eyes catching Baekhyun’s attention immediately. Chanyeol was busy wiping tables and Baekhyun purposely blows on his fingers and makes imprints on the glass table and Chanyeol only frowns at Baekhyun. Baekhyun only smiles at Chanyeol, eyes forming crescents and Chanyeol can’t bring himself to retort at Baekhyun.
“Since you were too busy with Luhan-sunbae to start coming to the café on a regular basis,” Chanyeol mumbles and Baekhyun frowns. Some reason or another, ever since he had started dating Luhan, Chanyeol had started to treat him really coldly and somehow, he feels that the only times that Chanyeol actually treats him so nonchalantly was whenever he was in a relationship (though, he wasn’t in many) and though he had seemed supportive at first, he’d just end up indifferent. It was like as if he didn’t approve of him dating his partner. “And his name is Kyungsoo, I’m sure you wanted to know that.”
“Oh, you seem close to him,” Baekhyun states off-handedly, looking at his nails. Chanyeol rolls his eyes and though Baekhyun doesn’t say anything, he really doesn’t like it.
“I’m close to everyone, as you’d put it into,” Chanyeol says. “And you would please order something because this is a café and you’re here, leeching off the free air conditioner before I kick you out of the café?”
“You wouldn’t dare,” Baekhyun responds, eyes meeting Chanyeol’s large ones.
“Oh, I would,” and Chanyeol kicks Baekhyun out of the café. With his shoes. And there’s a white shoeprint on Baekhyun’s jeans.

When Baekhyun sees Chanyeol and that new worker in Chanyeol’s café talking to each other, laughing and giggling, he ignores the growing feeling of dread in his pits and he swallows his ice-cream painfully. He looks at them from the park opposite the café (because Luhan had cancelled their date due to Council duties and Baekhyun is a very understanding boyfriend who doesn’t cling to and understands Luhan).
His mind registers the feeling that he feels, it starts with a j and it ends with a y, but Baekhyun doesn’t want to admit what he’s feeling.
It’s not a Sunday morning, but it’s a Friday night when the door of his room opens abruptly and Chanyeol stinks. He stinks of alcohol and Baekhyun gets a shock because they’re underage and Chanyeol smells really drunk, really really drunk. His long legs are staggering and before Baekhyun can mumble out a “what the hell, Chanyeol?”, Chanyeol crashes onto him and Baekhyun flinches at the smell of alcohol.
“Baekhyun-ah,” Chanyeol whispers and Baekhyun blinks, surprised. Chanyeol presses his lips against Baekhyun’s and Baekhyun gasps in surprise, but he kisses back because Chanyeol’s lips are so soft and oh my god, is that his tongue. Suddenly, Luhan’s face appears in Baekhyun’s mind and his eyes widen and he finally realizes that he’s kissing Chanyeol and he pushes Chanyeol away, Chanyeol landing on his bed.
“Baekhyun-ah, you know… I love you? So much, so much, that it hurts.” Chanyeol passes out as soon as he finishes his sentence and Baekhyun stares at Chanyeol’s sleeping figure, his fingers on his lips and he’s not really sure what just happened.
Baekhyun starts to suspect something when Luhan starts to bail out on him on their Friday afternoon dates but he never shows it in front of Luhan because that would just be rude. He avoids talking to Chanyeol after the incident but Chanyeol has no recollection of it and he acts like as if nothing had happened and Chanyeol speaks to him just like normal and Baekhyun is easily affected by Chanyeol and the incident is forgotten.
Baekhyun knows that what he’s doing is wrong but he still goes ahead and stalk Luhan after his lessons on Fridays because for once, Baekhyun knows that Luhan doesn’t have council duties but Luhan had texted him during class saying, “I’m sorry, I have council duties this afternoon” and Baekhyun tries not to overthink. He had asked Chanyeol for his assistance but Chanyeol had politely said that he had work and Baekhyun only sighs, pulling his bag to his sides and stalking after Luhan several meters away.
He chokes on air when he sees Luhan sucking face with a junior, who Baekhyun remembers seeing in school and he’s a jock and the tears are suddenly rolling down his cheeks. Luhan suddenly stops kissing the other male, rubbing at his cheek affectionately and looking at him with a gaze that Baekhyun knows that the older had never looked at him with. When Luhan reaches out to intertwine their fingers and Luhan looks out in the distance, Baekhyun and Luhan’s eyes meet and Baekhyun chokes again and he’s running, running, running though his vision is blurred with his tears.
He runs to the café Chanyeol works at because he knows that Chanyeol is there and Chanyeol’s his very definition of protection and he just wants to cry into Chanyeol’s arms, wetting his shirt and have Chanyeol’s arms wrap around him as if he was the only person in the world.
Her hears the jingling of the doorbell that’s attached to the top of the café door; he scans the posh interior and crashes headfirst into Chanyeol’s chest upon seeing him even though Chanyeol’s wiping the glass tables and Chanyeol jumps in surprise.
“Baekhyun! What happened?” Chanyeol questions but Baekhyun only shakes his head against Chanyeol’s uniform and his fingers clench tightly around Chanyeol’s uniform and Chanyeol wraps his arms around Baekhyun, rubs soothing circles and ignores the gazes of the people in the café as he leads Baekhyun into the employees’ area.
Chanyeol shoots Kyungsoo a look before he enters the room and Kyungsoo nods in understanding, a smile in his eyes and Chanyeol doesn’t say anything but rub Baekhyun’s back as Baekhyun wails in his arms.
When Baekhyun and Chanyeol go to school the next day, Chanyeol makes it a point to find Luhan and beat him up because Baekhyun had related the events to him in between sobs and sniffles. Baekhyun only pulls at Chanyeol’s sleeve and he shakes his head and Chanyeol only frowns because he can see Baekhyun’s red and puffy eyes and when they see Luhan by Baekhyun’s locker, Baekhyun hiccups and he freezes.
Luhan walks up to them and Chanyeol grabs Baekhyun’s wrist, pulling him behind him and he questions Luhan, “What do you want?”
“I just wanted to say,” Luhan starts and he blinks at Baekhyun, who refuses to meet his eyes. “I’m sorry. I really am and please, give me the chance to explain.”
“You don’t need to explain anything,” Chanyeol states blatantly, eyes boring holes into Luhan’s. “He saw everything.”
“Please,” Luhan repeats and Baekhyun tugs at Chanyeol’s sleeve and nods and Chanyeol only sighs and he brings Baekhyun slightly forward to let Luhan talk to him and explain himself.
“I’m really sorry because I dated you because I wasn’t sure of my feelings. I thought I liked Sehun but I didn’t think that he would like me too so I dated you because I thought that he wouldn’t reciprocate my feelings and I was just afraid that I’d get hurt. I do like you though, Baekhyun-ah, it’s just that, it’s not love,” Luhan says everything in a single breath and Baekhyun nods, feeling his eyes starting to water because he was basically used but Luhan had phrased everything in a way that didn’t make himself seem as bad.
Chanyeol steps out from behind and he punches Luhan square in the face and Baekhyun gasps. “So, you were just insecure of your feelings? That doesn’t give you the permission to use Baekhyun like that!”
Without sparing Luhan a second glance, Chanyeol grabs Baekhyun’s hand and runs away.
“Thank you, Chanyeol-ah,” Baekhyun whispers and he presses a kiss to Chanyeol’s cheek.
Chanyeol and Baekhyun only grow closer but as soon as they start hanging out at the café again, Chanyeol tells Baekhyun that Kyungsoo confessed to him and the two of them are dating. Baekhyun blinks in disbelief and shouts, “There is someone on this planet who can accept your weirdness apart from me?!”
“Of course there is!” Chanyeol glares at Baekhyun and Baekhyun only laughs because this is just, Chanyeol-like and Baekhyun likes it.
It’s almost as if Baekhyun was destined for a forever-alone life because he pushes back the feelings of the-feeling-that-starts-with-a-j-and-end
He spends the day visiting souvenir shops and skating alone in the rink while Baekhyun swears that he could hear Chanyeol’s scream from the roller coaster and Baekhyun stares at the ticket in his hand, crushing it slightly and muttering, “What a waste of my money.”
Chanyeol and Kyungsoo are having ice-cream together, Kyungsoo feeding Chanyeol his chocolate mint while Chanyeol swirls his strawberry ice cream into mush and presses it down with his pink plastic spoon and Kyungsoo looks at it, feeling extremely appalled.
“That looks disgusting,” Kyungsoo states and Chanyeol feigns a look of absolute horror.
“How is this disgusting! I’m just, mixing up the sugar levels in the ice-cream perfectly,” Chanyeol reasons and Kyungsoo makes a mental note never to argue with Chanyeol because Chanyeol’s reasoning is dumb and there is no way he can actually think of an argument that could triumph over Chanyeol’s reasons. “Just wait until you try it and you will regret your words.”
Chanyeol attempts to shove the spoon into Kyungsoo’s mouth and Kyungsoo’s large eyes grow even bigger as he tries to escape. Kyungsoo is saved by a phone call and Chanyeol reaches out for his phone and answers the call, eyes widening when the person on the line starts to speak. He presses the phone even harder against the shell of his ear, looks at Kyungsoo with an apologetic look and dashes out of the ice cream parlor.
“You’re so stupid, you’re so flipping stupid,” Chanyeol says loudly when he sees Baekhyun in the hospital, left leg in a cast and propped up in the air. Baekhyun only pouts and fidgets, playing with the apple that was included in the fruits basket in the room.
“Out of all the things that could have happened to you, you decided to fall down the stairs,” Chanyeol almost shouts and Baekhyun sighs and Chanyeol rubs his two fists against Baekhyun’s temples causing the older to whine and pout even more.
“I’m sorry….?” Baekhyun mumbles and Chanyeol shakes his head and grabs Baekhyun’s hand and holds it. Baekhyun frowns when he sees Chanyeol’s eyes, worry present and Baekhyun feels the tiny ounce of remorse upon seeing the brightness in Chanyeol’s large, doe-like eyes that little bit dimmer.
Baekhyun is hospitalized for 4 months and Chanyeol jokes that he’s lucky because he doesn’t need school, only to get a textbook flung at him. All of Baekhyun’s books have been moved to the hospital as his parents didn’t want Baekhyun to lose out and naturally, as his best friend, Chanyeol is now forced to pay attention in every class and copy two different sets of notes – one for himself and the other for Baekhyun, because Chanyeol’s notes are filled with doodles of ducks and dinosaurs and strawberries and Baekhyun likes his notes neat and tidy, colours occasionally used to emphasise several points.
Chanyeol comes to the hospital every day after school to see Baekhyun, goes together with Baekhyun to see his doctor and wheels him around to get bouts of fresh air. Chanyeol makes friends with the kids in the hospital and Baekhyun thinks that Chanyeol is just like the children because he gets along so well with them. Chanyeol tells Baekhyun that he’s taken a temporary leave at the café because taking care of Baekhyun was more important and he never really needed the money anyway. Baekhyun tries not the smile.
Baekhyun’s mother only chuckles from the side as she kisses Baekhyun’s temple and says “goodbye” because she has to go on another business trip together with his father, who was packing up at home.
Baekhyun feigns happiness when his mother leaves, waving enthusiastically and when the door closes with a “Bang”, Chanyeol frowns and he questions, “Why don’t you say anything about it? You clearly don’t like your parents forever being on business trips.”
“Chanyeol-ah, it’s not like I can do anything about it,” Baekhyun responds, eyes on the set of math notes that Chanyeol had brought for him instead. Chanyeol pursues his lips and he walks away to the other side of the room, where the wheelchair is and he pulls Baekhyun into it.
“Let’s go for a ride~” Chanyeol shouts enthusiastically and Baekhyun can’t help but smile.
“Let’s break up,” Kyungsoo breathes out when Chanyeol reaches the café he works at when Kyungsoo suddenly calls and asks to see Chanyeol and Chanyeol doesn’t reply, he’s silent, he’s still, almost as if he had expected Kyungsoo to say so.
“Okay,” Chanyeol replies and Kyungsoo’s surprised at the lack of emotion in his voice and the strange calmness that is present in his eyes.
“You’ve been in love with Baekhyun all this while, right?” Kyungsoo asks as Chanyeol looks up at him, surprised. He twirls the cup of coffee in his hands as Kyungsoo questions him about Baekhyun instead of leaving immediately, as how a regular break up would go. “I can tell from the way you look at him.”
“Yeah,” Chanyeol looks down into his coffee. “I love him.”
Chanyeol doesn’t need Kyungsoo to tell him that he loves Baekhyun. He already knows. For all his past relationships, all of them have left him for the same reason: “You don’t love me as much as you love Baekhyun. The way you look at me, and the way you look at Baekhyun is different”. It’s almost as if it’s a a Ctrl+C and Ctrl+V statement but he knows that it isn’t and it’s nothing but the truth.
“Then, why don’t you tell him?”
“I love him, just too much. I’m supposed to be his best friend, nothing more than that. It’s ironic, whenever I want to confess, he’ll be the one in a relationship. Whenever I’m in a relationship, he’d be the one who’s single. I’m always missing the chances to confess; It’s just like as if we’re the sun and the moon, we will always share the same sky but we'd never be together,” Chanyeol responds, with slight sadness. He looks up when he feels a hand on his shoulder, the weight comforting.
“Well, there’s something called the solar eclipse, isn’t there?” Kyungsoo states, a slight smile playing on his lips. “There’s a chance that the moon and the sun will meet, will be together.”
Something ignites in Chanyeol’s heart and Kyungsoo pushes him gently towards the door of the café.
Chanyeol thinks that he’s never run so fast in his entire life because he’s running back to the hospital and he dashes across the corridors to Baekhyun’s room. He flings the door open and grabs the wheelchair before Baekhyun can utter a word. He doesn't say anything though, only gives him a very wide-eyed, surprised look.
“What are you doing, Chanyeol,” Baekhyun questions as he’s pulled into his wheelchair and Chanyeol ignores him, opting to have his eyes on the floor of the corridor and pushing him to somewhere that Baekhyun doesn’t know.
Chanyeol leads him to the rooftop and he covers Baekhyun’s eyes with one hand (Baekhyun curses silently, why is Chanyeol’s hand so big) but he can still see the brightness that’s seeping through from the gaps of Chanyeol’s hands. When Chanyeol removes his hand from Baekhyun’s eyes, Baekhyun blinks when he sees something dark starting to move into the position of the Sun and he hears Chanyeol’s deep voice from behind.
“You know, Baekhyun-ah,” Chanyeol begins and he has his hands on Baekhyun’s shoulders, preventing the older from turning back and looking at him. “I’ve always liked you, loved you so much that it hurts. It’s so ironic, it’s just like as if you’re the Moon and I’m the Sun and whenever I wanted to confess, you’d be dating someone. I keep missing the chances to confess just like how the Sun and the Moon will never meet. But then, Kyungsoo told me, there is a chance when the Moon and the Sun will meet and that’s now.”
As the solar eclipse hangs over the sky, Chanyeol moves forward and kneels in front of Baekhyun. Baekhyun blinks at Chanyeol in shock, never expecting the younger to have confessed to him. Chanyeol smiles at Baekhyun and he reaches out for Baekhyun’s hand, intertwining their fingers together (the gaps are a perfect fit) while his other hand moves up to stroke Baekhyun’s cheek. Baekhyun flushes at the contact and he senses his surroundings slowly dimming even though he’s looking only at Chanyeol and Chanyeol is only looking at him and the world seems to be made up of only the two of them.
As soon as it’s all dark around them, Chanyeol leans in and presses his lips against Baekhyun’s, kissing him deeply and Baekhyun kisses back.
It’s a perfect moment, when the Sun and the Moon meet.
